“I For one find solace in the arts"
Point 1
Sigmund Freud theorises that the conscientious superego "strives to comfort the ego through humour, and protect it from suffering". [7] Here, Chappelle suggests the same idea, that finding “solace in the arts” (i.e. in comedy) helps to heal trauma and protect the self from further suffering. However, the “solace” that he finds in making insensitive jokes causes further suffering for other people, especially victims of sexual assault. While Chappelle focuses on his feelings about Bill Cosby’s rape conviction, he does not consider the victims and how he could also facilitate their “solace”, making him appear un-empathetic to their situation.
