Manne coins the term “himpathy” and defines it as “the excessive sympathy... shown toward male perpetrators of sexual violence”. [5] [p. 99] Here, Chappelle exhibits himpathy in that he defends Cosby, even after an increasing number of victims came forward with allegations. The argument of destroying legacies and careers is common against women, such as with Harvey Weinstein or Brock Turner, despite these sexual assaults potentially destroying the victim’s career. When Chappelle says this, the audience laughs, as if they agree with him. However, they may also laugh because they realise the foolishness of this statement, and realise that what he is saying links to a topic often used in the himpathiser demographic.
